One of the *many* responses i’ve been emailed re blog about Artist needing help:

I never know if RG wants to be named or not - but this is what he had to say:

“The carpenter exists because we need shelter. The farmer exists because we need food. The artist exists because we need emotion in all its forms, subtleties and bombast. So, of course those who kicked in on the kickstarter are "passionate”, and they are passionate about you because of the passion you evoke. You help them feel, think, contemplate, experience joy, sorrow, power, weakness, calm, fury, hope. The only difference between Michelangelo’s day and now is that in his day only a handful had the means to be patrons, and today that patronage can flow from 748 patrons instead of five. As to why they make that choice, we can be biochemical about it like my one doctor friend and say it’s all about stimulating the endocrine glands and releasing endorphins, or we can be spiritual and say God designed us to exist in communion with others and not in isolation, but the fact is we need to feel, and artists help us feel. And these days an awful lot of people are taking that for granted and getting that for nothing and anyone who’s not helping in return for the help they received is just freeloading. And I think in this time of people taking art they didn’t pay for, it’s acceptable and necessary that artists bluntly say so.“
