I wonder what it’s like to be Pretty
I wanna talk about the song “Pretty.” A lot of people come to me about that one. I wrote it on New Year’s eve before the album was released. I was at home, the Korg on the dining room floor, and the refrigerator humming (like the recording of the song). I was thinking about the superficial aspects of what is valued. How i was alone that night, at home. How that vicious cycle of material/visual acceptance in our culture is played out with bullets to self-esteem. 100% of us have every right to feel not just pretty, but *beautiful* - and that comes from loving ourselves first. We don’t all get a storybook beginning, but we can change the ending. No one can give you what you don’t have. Knowing you want to gain more self-esteem is the first step. And that vocal recording in particular, was one take, no changes–which is kind of what it’s like when you are sure of yourself and love yourself. One take, no changes. p+l
